Websites and marketing

Website design and marketing in Ventura County

We build and maintain websites, and run the marketing that points people at them: search, paid ads, social, and the AI assistants your customers now ask instead of searching.

Most marketing gets reported in clicks. We are bookkeepers, so we report it in dollars, against the same numbers you already look at every month.

Why us for this

A studio that reads financial statements.

  • Designed and built in Webflow, so you can edit it yourself
  • Search, ads, social and GEO handled under one roof
  • Results reported in dollars, never in impressions
  • Your domain, hosting and ad accounts stay in your name

Marketing that answers to the P&L

Most marketing gets sold on impressions, clicks and engagement. We are bookkeepers. The only question we find genuinely interesting is whether the money you put in came back out, and we are already looking at the account it would come back into.

Most of this work is for businesses whose books we already keep. That matters more than it sounds like it should: the spend and the revenue it produced end up in the same file, rather than in two systems somebody has to reconcile by hand before anyone can say whether it worked. If we do not keep your books, that is fine too. You just get an agency that can read a P&L.

What this covers

  • Websites built and maintained, quoted by engagement
  • SEO and GEO, so both people and AI assistants find you
  • Google Ads and paid search, managed month to month
  • Social marketing, planned and actually posted

The design and build work runs through MakersHub, our design studio. Same two people, different desk.

Six things, done properly

Take one, take all of them, or start with the website and add the rest later.

Websites

Built to be found and to convert

A site that loads fast, reads clearly on a phone, and tells a visitor within one screen what you do and what to do next. Built in Webflow, so you can edit your own copy without calling anyone.

Quoted by engagement, before any work starts.

Care

Maintained, not abandoned

Most small business sites are built once and left. We handle the updates, the broken links, the new service page, the seasonal change, and the things that quietly stop working after a platform update.

Ongoing, and you can stop any month.

SEO

Found in search

Titles, descriptions, headings, page structure, internal links and local signals. The unglamorous work that decides whether Google can tell what your pages are about and who they are for.

Includes your Google Business Profile.

Paid search

Google Ads and SEM

Campaigns built around the searches that actually indicate someone is ready to buy, with the wasted spend cut out rather than left running. Reported against what it brought back, not against clicks.

Your ad budget is never marked up.

Social

Showing up consistently

A plan, a calendar and posts that go out on schedule, in your voice. The point is not going viral. It is that a prospect who checks you out finds a business that is obviously still operating and paying attention.

Written and scheduled for you.

GEO

Cited by the AI assistants

A growing share of people now ask an assistant instead of searching, and it answers with a handful of businesses. Generative engine optimization is the work of being one of them: clear facts, consistent details, and pages an assistant can actually quote.

The newest of these, and the least crowded.

Websites

Built, and then actually maintained

The common story is a site built three years ago by someone who has since stopped answering email, with a phone number that is out of date and a services list that no longer matches what the business does. It is not that the owner did not care. It is that nobody was responsible for it after launch.

We build it and we keep it. The build is quoted as one engagement, priced up front, with a fixed scope you approve before anything starts. After launch it moves to ongoing care, where changes are just part of the arrangement rather than a quote every time you want to add a page.

Everything is built in Webflow and the site is yours. The account is in your name, the domain stays with you, and if you ever want to take it elsewhere you can, without a conversation about who owns what.

What a build includes

  • Structure the pages you need, and only those
  • Copy written or edited so it says something
  • Design built for phones first, because that is where your visitors are
  • Technical SEO titles, descriptions, headings and sitemap set up correctly
  • Forms that reach you, tested before launch
  • Analytics connected, so month one has a baseline

Hosting and your domain are billed to you directly by the vendor, so the accounts stay in your name.

Some of what we have built

  • custombooks.com cloud accounting software
  • This site the one you are reading

Happy to walk you through any of them and explain why they are put together the way they are.

Getting found

Search, ads, and the assistants people ask instead

SEO is the slow one and the one that compounds. It is titles and descriptions, headings that match what people actually type, pages that cover a topic properly rather than in four sentences, and a Google Business Profile that is filled out completely. None of it is clever. All of it gets skipped.

Paid search is the fast one. It buys you the top of the page today, which is worth doing when you have something specific to sell and a page worth sending people to. It is also the easiest place in marketing to lose money quietly, which is why we report it against revenue rather than against clicks.

GEO is the new one. When someone asks an assistant for a bookkeeper in Ventura, it names two or three. Being one of them depends on your details being consistent everywhere, your pages stating facts plainly enough to be quoted, and your business being described the same way across every place it appears. That work overlaps with good SEO, but it is not identical, and almost nobody local is doing it yet.

What we report each month

  • Where you rank for the searches that matter to you
  • What the site brought in: calls, forms, bookings
  • Ad spend, and what it produced
  • Cost per inquiry, and which way it is moving
  • Which pages are doing the work and which are not
  • Whether assistants are naming you, and for what

Sent in plain language, not a dashboard export. If a number moved, we tell you what we think caused it and what we plan to do about it.

How this is priced

Three arrangements, and you are told which one applies before any work starts.

One-time

Website builds

Quoted by engagement. We scope it with you, put a fixed price in writing, and that is the price. If the scope changes because you want something added, we requote that piece rather than letting the number drift.

Nothing starts until you have approved the quote.

Monthly

Ongoing marketing and care

A flat monthly fee covering whichever pieces you have chosen: site maintenance, SEO, GEO, ad management, social, or any combination. No hourly meter, and no charge for asking a question, same as the bookkeeping.

Month to month. Stop whenever you like.

Pass-through

Your ad budget

Whatever you spend on Google or Meta is billed by them, to you, on your own card. It never passes through us and we never take a percentage of it. You can log in and see exactly what was spent at any time.

You set the budget, and you can change it any time.

What we do not do

Said up front, so nobody finds out in month three.

  • We do not guarantee rankings. Anyone who guarantees you a position on Google is either misunderstanding how it works or counting on you not to check.
  • We do not mark up your ad spend or take a percentage of it. You pay the platform directly and you can see every dollar.
  • We do not lock you into a long contract. The monthly arrangement is month to month, and the website is yours whether you stay or not.
  • We do not hold your accounts hostage. Your domain, hosting, ad accounts and analytics are all in your name from day one.
  • We do not write claims we cannot stand behind. If your industry has advertising rules, medical or legal or financial, we will work within them and tell you where the line is.
  • We do not do print, broadcast, video production or PR. We will happily work alongside someone who does.

Websites and marketing FAQ

Why is a bookkeeping firm doing marketing?

Fair question, and worth answering directly. The design and build side runs through MakersHub, our design studio, and it existed alongside the bookkeeping rather than being bolted on to it. It is the same two people, doing work we have done for years.

The reason it sits well with bookkeeping is that most marketing reporting stops at the click. Ours does not, because we are already in the accounts. When we say a campaign paid for itself, we are looking at the same P&L you are.

Do I have to be a bookkeeping client?

No. Plenty of this work is for businesses whose books we do not touch, and there is no requirement to bundle the two.

If we do keep your books, you get one useful thing extra: the marketing spend and the revenue it produced are already in the same file, so the reporting is a real comparison rather than an estimate stitched together from two systems.

What is GEO, and do I actually need it?

Generative engine optimization. When someone asks ChatGPT, Claude or Google's AI overview for a plumber in Camarillo, it does not return ten blue links. It names two or three businesses. GEO is the work of being one of the names.

Whether you need it depends on your customers. If they are the sort of people who now ask an assistant before they search, then yes, and the good news is that very few local businesses are working on it, so the ground is not crowded yet. If your customers find you by driving past, it matters less and we will tell you that.

How long before I see anything from SEO?

Some things move in weeks: a Google Business Profile that was half filled in, pages that were missing titles, a site that was slow. Those are usually the first month, and they are often the biggest single jump.

Real ranking movement on competitive terms takes months, not weeks. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something. If you need results faster than that, paid search is the honest answer and we will say so.

I already have a website. Can you work with it?

Usually, yes, and we would rather improve what you have than sell you a rebuild you did not need. We will look at it, tell you honestly whether the problem is the site or the marketing around it, and quote accordingly.

Sometimes the answer is a rebuild, most often when the platform is holding you back or the structure is working against you. When that is the case we will show you what specifically is causing it rather than just saying it looks dated.

What if it is not working?

We tell you, in the monthly report, before you have to ask. Marketing that is not producing is a fact worth knowing early, and hiding it behind a chart of impressions helps nobody.

The arrangement is month to month for exactly this reason. If a channel is not earning its place we either change the approach or stop spending on it, and if the whole thing is not working you are not tied in.
